Healthy Leaders Build Healthy Rhythms
The demands on your time as a leader are constant. There are almost always people and tasks waiting on your attention.
In order to be healthy as leaders, we have to build healthy rhythms into our lives. Here are a few methods that can help:
Prioritize your health - mental, physical, emotional, and relational - and block time on your calendar for whatever keeps you healthy. Rest, play, exercise, meal prep, therapy, family time, connecting with friends, etc. If it is not on your calendar, it probably won’t happen.
Block time for planning and scheduling. This is essential. If you are not blocking time to plan ahead, that time will not magically appear on your schedule. You are going to be stuck in a cycle of being reactive rather than proactive. Planning and scheduling gives you more power over how you spend your time and energy. Unexpected things will happen, of course. You will still have to pivot. But having a plan helps you to prioritize and be proactive. Block time on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis just to plan ahead.
Capitalize on your natural rhythms. Schedule your most important work for when you have the most energy and protect that time. Schedule your least important work for when you have less energy.
These are just a few principles that have been incredibly helpful for me. What works best for you?
